One Step Ahead is a comprehensive program designed to address the most pertinent topic areas in
the field of prosthetics and amputee rehabilitation. This dynamic and thought provoking presentation allows
therapists and prosthetists to interact and develop a fresh understanding of how every discipline involved in
prosthetic rehabilitation, working together as a team can generate a better than satisfaclory result for the
amputee.
At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to:
- Identify prevalent medical and demographic information related to amputees.
- Impliment an acute care program for the amputee and state the rationale for various methods of residual limb care and preprosthetic training.
- Identity the various types of prosthetic components including but not limited to: foot/ankle assemblies, knees, sockets and suspension devices and discuss the differences in function between like components.
- Justify indications, contraindications, advantages, and disadvantages of various lower extremity prosthetic devices.
- Instruct the patient in the maintenance procedures for their prosthesis.
- Apply normal gait kinematic principles to amputee gait and differentiate between prosthetic and physical causes of gait deviations.
- Assess the physical and functional status of the amputee throughout the rehabilitative process using a systematic approach of evaluation.
- Prepare the amputee for prosthetic gait training by implementing a program of strengthening, ROM, balance, agility, coordination, and endurance.
- Apply traditional and innovative therapeutic techniques designed for prosthetic gait training and other functional skills with the goal of improving the amputee’s overall function.
- Problem solve for various techniques to teach recreational activities in which amputee clients may wish to participate.
- Develop a treatment plan for the comprehensive management of the amputee.
